About Aged Care Costs

Why we exist

Most families face aged care fees for the first time in a rush: a fall, a hospital stay, a call to say Mum or Dad can't go home. Suddenly there are forms, room prices, lump sums and daily payments, and questions about the house and the pension that nobody seems able to answer simply.

We built Aged Care Costs for the sons, daughters and other family members who end up handling it. Our aim is simple: help you understand the costs and the choices in plain English, quickly, so you can have better conversations with your parent, your family, the aged care home and a licensed adviser.

What we do

  • Estimate the costs. Our calculator uses the government's published rates and rules to estimate aged care fees and room costs, based on the details you enter.
  • Explain the rules. Every report explains what each fee is, why it applies and where the rule comes from, with links to the official sources.
  • Show the options side by side. Where a report compares options, such as paying by lump sum or daily payment, it shows how the numbers differ. It doesn't rank them.

What we don't do

  • We don't tell you which option to choose, which aged care home to pick or what to do with the house.
  • We don't hold an Australian financial services licence, and nothing we provide is financial, tax or legal advice.
  • No one at Aged Care Costs reviews your family's situation. Your figures come from our calculator and the details you enter.
  • We don't sell your information, and we don't share it with aged care homes or advertisers. See our Privacy policy.

For decisions about your family's money, we encourage you to speak with a licensed financial adviser who specialises in aged care. Services Australia's free Financial Information Service can also help you understand how things work.

How we keep it accurate

  • Our rates come from official sources, including My Aged Care, Services Australia and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
  • We explain the rules in our own words. We don't republish government pages.
  • Every estimate and report shows the date of the rates it uses. Many aged care rates change during the year, and we update ours when they do.
  • We test our calculator against worked examples.
  • If something isn't covered by our calculator yet, the report says so clearly rather than guessing.
