General information, not personal advice

Everything on agedcarecosts.com (our calculator, family reports, guides and emails) is general information only. It doesn't take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of you, your parent or anyone else in your family. It isn't financial product advice, tax advice, legal advice or Centrelink advice, and it isn't a recommendation to choose any option, aged care home, payment method or financial product.

We don't hold an Australian financial services licence. Where a report shows several options side by side, such as keeping or selling the home, or paying by RAD, DAP or a combination, it shows how the numbers compare. It doesn't rank the options or say which is right for your family.

Estimates depend on your inputs and on rates at a date

  • Our figures are estimates. They're only as accurate as the details entered. If any detail is missing, out of date or wrong, the estimate will be too.
  • Estimates use the government rates and thresholds in force as at the date shown on each estimate, report and guide. Aged care rates are indexed regularly (many on 20 March and 20 September, and some on 1 July or every quarter), and the rules can change. An estimate made today may not match the fees charged later.
  • The fees your family actually pays are set by Services Australia (or the Department of Veterans' Affairs) through the means assessment, and by the agreements with the aged care home. Where our estimate differs from an official letter or agreement, the official document applies.
  • We check our calculations against official worked examples and the official fee estimator. Even so, errors are possible. If you think something is wrong, please tell us at support@agedcarecosts.com.

Getting advice

Aged care decisions can have large and lasting financial effects, for example on the Age Pension, an estate or a partner who stays at home. Before making decisions, consider:

  • speaking with a licensed financial adviser, ideally one who specialises in aged care. You can check an adviser's licence on ASIC's Financial Advisers Register (Moneysmart);
  • using Services Australia's free Financial Information Service (FIS): https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/financial-information-service;
  • getting legal advice before signing accommodation or service agreements, and free advocacy from the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) on 1800 700 600.
